CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — On March 18, 2017, Illinois Athletic Director Josh Whitman introduced Brad Underwood as the new head coach of the Fighting Illini men's basketball team. This hire felt different. Underwood said at the introductory press conference, where Underwood spoke about the rich history of Illinois basketball, even mentioning a Brian Cook jersey he purchased demonstrating he knew the history and was a fan of the program.
