CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- Rico Jackson has become the first renounced verbal commitment of Illinois’ 2023 football recruiting class. 

The 6-foot-6, 295-pound offensive lineman from Dillard High School in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. announced Friday afternoon on social media that it is his intention to not sign with Illinois and to re-open his recruitment. 

Jackson made the decision to become the fifth verbal commitment of Illini’s 2023 recruiting class during his official campus visit last month. Jackson was the “late arriving official visitor” that Illinois head coach Bret Bielema was referencing during his June media availability at Atkins Golf Club in Urbana and gave his commitment before leaving the Champaign campus. Jackson had several other early scholarship offers from Power Five Conference programs including Michigan, Miami, Arizona State, Georgia Tech, Indiana, Colorado and Boston College. Illinois’ late momentum in the recruiting process that included a lot of personal attention from Bielema and other highly interested schools having off-the-field issues (including Miami’s coaching staff change and Arizona State’s notice of allegations from the NCAA pushed them over the top.

It's the last weekend in July.  That means the start of the fall semester is just around the corner AND we're now less than 90 days away from the Illini basketball team starting preseason drills in its quest to climb higher among the nation's elite.

After a whirlwind spring that saw two-time All-American Kofi Cockburn change his mind and enter the NBA draft, a pair of athletic, veteran Big 12 transfers join the roster, and arguably the most talented Illini freshman class in years step onto campus, the time is drawing near to see what this group has - and what it needs to do.

IlliniGuys Insider/Analyst Brad Sturdy takes a sneak peek inside the still-being-renovated Ubben practice facility and updates us on the refurbished project that is Illinois basketball.  A program that's coming off a Big Ten tournament title and conference regular season championship in consecutive years isn't satisfied.

INDIANAPOLIS – Illinois athletic director Josh Whitman did a scrum session with local media Wednesday morning during day two of Big Ten Media Days. A variety of topics were discussed, including the departure of gymnastics coach Justin Spring, the possibility of Notre Dame joining the conference soon, and the early success of the Tailgate Tour.

The Tailgate Tour had been in the works for quite some time, giving Illinois fans and alumni a chance to meet and interact with some of the most prominent coaches at the University, including names like head football coach Bret Bielema, head men’s basketball coach Brad Underwood, and newly minted women’s basketball coach Shauna Green. The tour took place throughout the late-spring and month of June with stops in Aurora, Belleville, Springfield, the Quad Cities, Peoria, Rockford, and Winnetka.

Illinois women’s basketball coach Shauna Green and staff are taking a page from football coach Bret Bielema: when you see talent in your backyard, you try to go get them.

Earlier this month, Green and company offered Chicago Whitney Young sophomore-to-be Destiny Jackson, a 5-foot-8 guard who already is listed as one of the nation’s top players.

Bret Bielema is determined to not let the void of Ben Miller’s cancer battle create a development hole with one of Illini head coach’s favorite position groups - tight end.

INDIANAPOLIS -- One of Bret Bielema will quickly tell anybody who will listen that one of favorite position groups is the tight end.

In his head coaching tenure, Bielema has had a John Mackey Award winner and sent multiple tight ends to the National Football League. So, when Ben Miller’s cancer fight forced one of his first assistant coaching hires at Illinois into medical leave, Bielema finds himself personally responsible for an Illini position group that he’s very excited to approach for this 2022 season. 

The loss of Miller was quickly accounted for with the immediate announcement of a long-term hiring in the works as Sean Snyder comes to Champaign to work as the special teams coordinator. However, Bielema confirmed Wednesday at Big Ten Football Media Days that his tight end room, which includes returning veterans Luke Ford, Tip Reiman and Michael Marchese, will be handled by a staff committee system.

INDIANAPOLIS -- Kevin Warren showed up at Big Ten Football Media Days on Tuesday saying he felt blessed, grateful and thankful. 

And why the heck not, right?

“When I think about how far we've progressed these last few years, my heart is warm,” the Big Ten Conference commissioner said in his introductory speech Tuesday morning.

In last year’s version of the state of Big Ten speech, Warren stood at the podium at Lucas Oil Stadium and absolutely made no friends with the word salad that was regurgitated following the public whipping he took on behalf of his 14 bosses inside the Big Ten Council of Presidents and Chancellors when they got to skate over COVID-19 issues in 2020. On Tuesday, Warren finally had the opportunity to speak with his chest puffed out with a swagger of newfound confidence. And the leader of arguably one of the most important identities in college football spent most of time as a lobbyist. Warren stressed the Big Ten Conference needs to continue to make bold, strategic moves similarly to the expansion inclusion of USC and UCLA in order to build the cash cow of college football into what is slowly but surely becoming a Power Two and however many also-ran leagues exist in the future of the sport.

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- Calvin Hart Jr. needed just one game last season to get on the watch list for Butkus Award in the following season. 

And that’s a really good thing because one game is all he got in the 2021 campaign. Hart was arguably the premier member of Bret Bielema’s debut as Illinois head coach last August in a 30-22 victory over Nebraska on national television. Hart, who transferred to Illinois from North Carolina State, was named the Bednarik Award National Player of the Week honors and the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week following 1.5 TFLs and a 41-yard fumble return touchdown in the first half before suffering a season-ending knee injury in the game that forced him to miss the remainder of the season.

URBANA, Ill. -- Bret Bielema knows what a John Mackey Award looks like and would like to see his projected starting tight end get close to level. 

Luke Ford, who is entering his final season at Illinois, was one of 54 tight ends to appear on the 2022 preseason watch list for the award given to the nation’s best tight end in college football. Ford, a 6-foot-6 and 260-pound tight end from Carterville, finished this past season with just 15 receptions for 114 yards and two touchdowns last season. All of these career-high numbers for Ford, a former five-star tight end prospect who originally signed with and played his first season at Georgia, still represent a slightly disappointing set of results for a four-year career that he’s publicly said he’d like to reverse in his final season in Champaign.
