Gifford, Ill. -- Fred Hoiberg joked with local media Tuesday that beyond the obvious reason of supporting any form of cancer donation, the Nebraska head men’s basketball coach wanted an evening where he could safely put down his cell phone.
While in the heart of the transfer portal tampering and recruiting season Tuesday night, Hoiberg enthusiastically agreed to join Illinois head men’s basketball coach Brad Underwood in a 160,000-square foot horse barn arena because it had nothing to do with the currently unstable world of player acquisition in the largest division of college basketball.
Not 10 minutes after saying that to local media, Hoiberg was being pulled away for the second time by calls and texts on his cell phone from guests who wanted a picture or a short chit-chat session with the former head coach of the NBA’s Chicago Bulls.
