Illinois five-star signee Quentin Coleman will be bringing home a silver medal after the United States of America lost the championship match of the FIBA Under-18 AmeriCup tournament for the first time since 2008.
Canada completed an undefeated run through the tournament with a dramatic 67-65 victory over Team USA, with Coleman finishing his 25 minutes of action off the bench with eight points and 10 rebounds but also had four turnovers while struggling with foul trouble.
Coleman struggled with his shooting, which was a consistent storyline of his tournament in León, Mexico this whole week, as the 6-foot-4 guard missed all four of his attempts from three-point range and all three of his free throw attempts as well. Coleman, who signed with Illinois in mid-April after announcing his verbal pledge while the Illini were in the midst of its Final Four run of the 2026 NCAA Tournament, had five offensive rebounds, two assists and a block. Coleman was on the floor with Team USA for the final 87 seconds of the game, where Canada held the Americans scoreless in the final three possessions to pull off the country’s first-ever victory in this tournament.
Coleman’s final turnover on a desperate drive into the lane led to a breakout dunk for Deng Ngor on the other end that would serve as the game-winning basket with 61 seconds left. Ngor, a three-star 2027 prospect currently playing for Fort Erie International Academy in Ontario, scored Canada’s final five points to complete the comeback win in a game where the lead changed 13 times. Ngor had 15 points on just eight field goal attempts in 25 minutes.
Every one of the four baskets made by Coleman on Sunday night was from point-blank range as he missed every one of his seven attempts from outside the charge circle in the lane. This performance came 24 hours after the Illini five-star signee led Team USA to a 102-56 win over Brazil where the Americans never trailed in the 2026 FIBA U18 Men’s AmeriCup semifinal, where he finished with 15 points on 6-for-9 shooting from the field to go along with 10 rebounds.
Coleman finished the event leading all players by averaging 11.4 rebounds per contest and double-digit scoring efforts in three of the five games. However, he finished just 7 of 24 from three-point range and was just 3 of 8 from the foul line.
The Americans were led by the 11 points off the bench by 6-foot-10 forward Darius Wabbington, who is a five-star prospect from Phoenix, Arizona in the 2027 recruiting cycle.
Canada made Team USA pay for nearly each of its 21 turnovers leading to 24 points for the Canadians and 17 fast-break points. The length of the Canadian roster seemed to bother the Americans offensive plan as they attempted just eight free throws Sunday night and were 19 of 44 on two-point field goal attempts.
This marks the streak of gold medals for Team USA in this event at seven, with the last loss being a 77-64 defeat on July 18, 2008 in the gold medal against Argentina. That American team from 18 years ago was led by former NBA players Kemba Walker, Mason Plumlee, JaMychal Green and Malcolm Lee. The head coach of that United States team was former Davidson College head coach Bob McKillop. In a bit of irony, an assistant coach on that 2008 Team USA Under-18 squad was the American’s losing head coach 18 years later - Anthony Grant.
This was the fourth time in tournament history that Canada and USA met in the FIBA U18 AmeriCup championship game. The Americans won the previous matchups in 2014, 2016, and 2018 by an average margin of victory of 29.3 points per game.
