CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The Illinois football program recently absorbed a significant recruiting loss when one of the most highly decorated quarterback prospects of the Bret Bielema era, Kamden Lopati, switched his commitment to Michigan. Still, the response from the Illini staff has been swift and focused, embracing the “next man up” mentality as they continue to build for the future.
Illinois has already turned the page, extending an offer to 2027 quarterback Dan Weber, a 6-foot, 220-pound signal caller from Chaparral High School in Temecula, California. The offer came earlier this week as the Illini staff made a late but strong push to get involved in Weber’s recruitment.
Weber is no stranger to national attention. He holds offers from California, Kansas, Georgia, UCLA, and Oregon, among others, highlighting his growing profile as one of the top young quarterbacks in the country.
During his junior campaign, Weber threw for more than 2,500 yards and 27 touchdowns. He also added nearly 100 rushing yards, showcasing mobility to complement his passing ability.
Illinois quarterbacks coach Artur Sitkowski has played a key role in making this recruitment possible. Despite Illinois entering the race later than other programs, Sitkowski’s efforts reflect the staff’s ability to identify and pursue high-level talent, even against stiff national competition. His involvement shows the program’s commitment to remaining active in recruiting elite prospects across the country.
While Illinois may have joined the pursuit late, recent success at the position provides a compelling pitch. Starkville, Mississippi, native Luke Altmyer was shown as a strong example of development within the program, giving Illinois credibility with quarterbacks evaluating their options.
Weber fits a similar mold. Like Altmyer, he is primarily a pocket quarterback but has the ability to extend plays with his legs when needed. That balance makes him an intriguing prospect for an Illinois offense that values both efficiency in the passing game and situational mobility.
As the Illini continue to navigate the evolving recruiting world, the offer to Weber shows that the program remains aggressive and forward-looking, even in the face of setbacks.
