Illini Plummet to No. 23 in Both Major Polls

By IlliniGuys Staff

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - The Illinois football team fell to No. 23 in both the Associated Press and coaches' polls on Sunday.

The Illini had been ranked 8th in the coaches' poll and 9th in the AP before Saturday night's lopsided 63-10 loss at then-19th ranked Indiana. It was Illinois' biggest loss at a top 10 ranked team since 1989 and their worst defeat overall since a 63-0 decision at home to Iowa in 2018.

Illinois (3-1, 0-1 in Big Ten) spent back-to-back weeks in the AP Top 10 for the first time since 1990, which was the last time they were in every Associated Press Top 25 poll for the entire season.

To have a shot at staying in the poll, Illinois will need to beat Southern California Saturday at Gies Memorial Stadium (11am CDT, FOX). The Trojans (4-0, 1-0) enter the week at No. 21, up four spots after beating Michigan State 35-21 in the Big Ten opener for both programs.
