For the second straight season, Illinois has agreed to play a neutral-site game at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena. The Illini will play North Carolina on Jan. 30, 2027.

CHAMPAIGN — The University of Illinois athletics department is looking to double down on its recent success inside the Music City of Nashville.

Following a neutral-site regular-season win from the men’s basketball team, a bowl game win for football and an NCAA Tournament victory for the women’s basketball team inside the city limits of Nashville, the Illini have eagerly agreed to have its men’s basketball operation invade Bridgestone Arena once again in 2027 with an intriguing neutral-site non-conference game.

In the midst of his annual three-hour roundtable discussion with local media inside the Bielfeldt Athletics Administration Building on Thursday afternoon, Illinois athletics director Josh Whitman confirmed the Illini men’s basketball program will play North Carolina in Nashville on Jan. 30, 2027. Illinois defeated Tennessee 75-62 last season in Nashville on Dec. 6, 2025 as part of a 7-2 start to its non-conference slate and months before the Illini would make its first Final Four appearance in 21 years.

Illinois last played North Carolina on Nov. 30, 2010 inside Assembly Hall in Champaign as part of the ACC-Big Ten Challenge series, with the Illini winning 79-67 behind 20 points, 10 rebounds and five assists from forward Mike Davis.

The last time the two programs met in an off-campus matchup was the 2005 national championship game in St. Louis with the Tar Heels winning 75-70 despite Luther Head finishing with a team-high 21 points while Deron Williams had 17 points and seven assists and Dee Brown provided 12 points and seven assists.

The two power programs in men’s basketball could’ve met in the second round of the 2026 NCAA Tournament in Greenville, South Carolina but the Tar Heels were upset by Virginia Commonwealth in the first round.

The matchup in Jan. 2027 will feature Illinois having key returnees David Mirkovic, Tomislav Ivisic, Andrej Stojakovic, Jake Davis and Zvonimir Ivisic on the roster along with Providence transfer Stefan Vaaks and a five-star incoming freshman Quentin Coleman. This game will be part of a rigorous non-conference schedule created by Illinois head coach Brad Underwood that includes a road game at Texas Tech, a road game at Duke, a Final Four rematch against Connecticut on Dec. 4 at the United Center in Chicago and the annual Braggin' Rights game versus Missouri in St. Louis.

“North Carolina is one of college basketball's most storied programs, and they will have an excellent team once again,” Underwood said in a news release. “We had a tremendous experience in Nashville last season, and I know our fans will be excited to return to the Music City on Jan. 30 to watch us face the Tar Heels.”

North Carolina will have a first-year head coach as Michael Malone was announced in early April as the replacement for the departed Hubert Davis. Malone is a long-time coach in the National Basketball Association, including head coaching stints with the Sacramento Kings and the Denver Nuggets that resulted in a 2023 NBA championship.

“Stepping out of conference play for a high-profile national game presents a good opportunity for both programs,” Malone said in a news release. “Illinois was a Final Four team last year and we expect they will have another outstanding team. It should be a great test for us.”

The Tar Heels are expected to start the season with a playing rotation that includes three of the top 11 scorers in the Atlantic Coast Conference - Jarin Stevenson, Isaiah Denis and Jaydon Young - along with former All-Big 12 Conference point guard Terrence Brown from Utah, North Carolina State transfer guard Matt Able, Virginia Tech transfer wing Neoklis Avdalas and five-star freshman center Sayon Keita from Spain.
