CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – When the season began, the Illinois Fighting Illini men's basketball had national title aspirations. The Iowa Hawkeyes men's basketball were simply hoping to make the NCAA Tournament.
Now, both programs meet Saturday in Houston with a trip to the Final Four on the line in Indianapolis.
Much has changed since Illinois escaped Iowa City with a 75-69 win on Jan. 19. Iowa has evolved offensively, developing a more balanced attack around All-Big Ten performer Bennett Stirtz. Contributors like Cooper Koch and Alvaro Folgueiras have emerged as reliable scoring threats, giving the Hawkeyes added depth.
Illinois, meanwhile, has remained potent offensively. But its postseason surge has been defined by defense, led by senior guard Kylan Boswell and freshman Keaton Wagler.
The Illini backcourt has reshaped the team’s defensive identity, setting the tone with toughness, communication, and trust. Any notion of Illinois overlooking Iowa has been dismissed internally, especially by a duo that understands the stakes.
IlliniGuys spoke with Logan Wagler and Brandon Boswell, whose sons anchor the Illinois backcourt, about the growth, chemistry, and mindset driving this run.
Logan Wagler has watched his son’s development closely, particularly on the defensive end.
"Keaton has really grown as a player. I think he has learned so much from his coaches and teammates. He has always been a sponge, so getting taught the details of offensive schemes, scouting reports, angles on defense, etc. has allowed him to get so much better."
That growth has been accelerated by Kylan's leadership.
"Kylan just welcomed Keaton with open arms and really has taken him under his wing. Kylan is such a great leader and teammate, that has made it easy for Keaton to get comfortable. They also quickly became great friends, which helps the chemistry and has allowed them to build trust. Lastly, I think their games really complement each other. Both just care about winning above all else."
The results have been evident in March, where Illinois has leaned on defense and rebounding to advance.
"We are most proud of Keaton's defense and rebounding. He has learned so much from the coaches about angles, screen navigation, etc., which is now really starting to show. He knows that to win in March, we have to be the tougher defensive team." Logan said.
For Logan Wagler, the experience of watching this run has been just as meaningful as the results.
"It’s a thrill. We want it so badly for this team and the coaches. They are truly an amazing team and deserve all of this."
The connection between Kylan and Keaton has become a defining element of Illinois’ success.
"They trust each other and are so connected. Kylan and Keaton have hit a point as teammates where they don’t have to say anything; they just know what each other is thinking and doing. They complement each other so well. It’s truly special to watch," Wagler said.
Brandon Boswell echoed those sentiments, emphasizing how his son’s experience has helped stabilize the backcourt.
"Kylan’s experience helps Keaton to remain calm and to be a leader for the team. His determination and ability to stay humble and concentrated no matter who they play has been fun to watch."
Their skill sets have blended seamlessly, creating one of the most effective guard pairings in the tournament.
"Keaton is a scoring playmaker. Kylan is a complimentary guard for anyone. He genuinely gets joy from seeing teammates score. I think they’re a match made in heaven." added Brandon.
.
Kylan's defensive mindset has been a constant throughout his career and remains central to Illinois’ approach.
"Kylan has always been taught that regardless of what is happening on the offensive side, you can control the game through defense. The one thing he can control every night is his intensity on that side of the ball. I think he knows it’s his calling card and loves it."
That mentality has spread throughout the roster, helping create a tight-knit group during a season filled with challenges.
"This team’s love for each other is just a mesh of similar personalities. They’re all silly in person and have no ego. It’s a great group." Brandon said.
Boswell described the season as something out of a storybook.
"I keep saying it’s our Disney season. The players coming together from all over the world, our super freshman stories, injuries all year long but everything coming together right now is a great script for Hallmark or Disney."
Inside the locker room, however, the tone is far from lighthearted when it comes to Iowa. The rivalry, especially for players and coaches, carries a different intensity.
As Boswell shared, the message has been clear among the players.
"We will die before losing here to Iowa!"
That edge reflects the urgency and focus Illinois brings into Saturday’s matchup. With a Final Four berth at stake, the Illini will rely heavily on the defensive tone set by Boswell and Wagler.
If their connection continues to dictate tempo and disrupt opponents, Illinois may find itself one step closer to Indianapolis.
