STEVENS: Embrace This Illini Nation, This Is What Domination Looks & Feels Like

It’s been a long time since Illinois football has done what it did Saturday - be ranked near the Top 10 went into a road environment and strutted around like it owned the place.

DURHAM, N.C. — So, here’s a dirty little secret of what you just watched this afternoon and what took place on this Saturday afternoon over three hours and 40 minutes in Durham, North Carolina.

That is what a veteran-based team with years of continuity in the coaching staff and ranked No. 11 in the Associated Press Top 25 poll, is supposed to do to an unranked team with no home crowd advantage.

Sure, it may seem like a foreign concept or a long-lost memory to many diehard followers of the orange and blue (well, actually, you should actually remember seeing it on the wrong end too many times at Memorial Stadium) but that may be a thing of the past now.

At only one point was this game in drastic doubt after Illinois, up 14-13 at halftime, was forced to punt in the opening drive of the second half. However, Duke’s coaching staff put two players wearing a No. 8 jersey on the field and another mental error allowed Illinois to shove the football down the field and easily make it 21-13 before Duke head coach Manny Diaz could realize what was going on.

What was going on is Illinois was older, more talented and more ready for the moment at nearly every positional group on the field. And after 60 minutes of action, a 45-19 margin was created because as Illini head coach Bret Bielema has said over and over and then over again “more games at this level are lost than won”. On Sept. 6, 2025, Illinois (2-0) came into this matchup ranked No. 11 and favored on the road because they capitalized every single time Duke (1-1) elected to hand Bielema’s squad a present.

When a team wins the turnover battle in a game by five (!), the final score by that team that created the five takeaways should look something like 45-19.

When the No. 11 team in the nation dominates its opponent 31-6 in the second half, the fan dynamic changes to basically the only people left inside Wallace Wade Stadium were folks wearing the road team’s colors. The Alabama’s, Ohio State’s, Georgia’s and Michigan’s of the college footbal world know this feeling all too well. They expect to feel like this when they face unranked foes in their stadium. Illinois got their turn Saturday.

Yes, Duke got its early punches in and Illinois only led 14-13 going into halftime. Wanna know another secret? Coming off a nine-win season themselves, Duke may just not be terrible at football in 2025. But they went ready for the moment that was the second-half brigade of Barry Lunney’s offensive play-calling, Aaron Henry’s ball-hawking defense and Bret Bielema’s overall game management turned in to record a dominating 26-point win on the road in early September.

Duke quarterback Darian Mensah ended the afternoon with 334 passing yards but he also had four turnovers (one for every million of dollars Duke is reportedly paying the very talented young man to transcend their offense with his talent) and Illinois took all of those turnovers and traded them in for points of their own.

Sure, we may live in a college football world where Illinois isn’t supposed to be this talented, this poised and isn't supposed to be this dominant. But your eyes didn’t deceive you on this Saturday afternoon. This wasn’t a fluke. It wasn’t some miracle of a play here or a play there that caused a 26-point, plus-5 turnover advantage blowout win in front of a national television audience.

We may have nearly four months left in this college football regular season but what No. 11 Illinois served witness to in NASCAR country on this Saturday afternoon was race car with better equipment, a more experienced driver and a world-class pit crew repeatedly lap a Duke team still trying figure out how to make that leap from good to consistently in a new tier.

This is what a team ranked near the Top 10 does when they want to make a bold statement to everybody. Consider the mic officially dropped for Illinois football in 2025.
