CHAMPAIGN, Ill.– Illinois guard Keaton Wagler (Shawnee, Kansas) is Big Ten Freshman of the Week, the conference office announced Monday. Wagler earns this latest honor following dominant performances in wins at No. 5 Nebraska and at home over Washington.
Wagler Highlights (Jan. 26-Feb. 1)
• Averaged 25 points, 6.5 assists, five rebounds, and two steals in a pair of victories as Illinois extended its Big Ten-leading win streak to 11 in a row.
• Made 50% from the field, 46.2% from three, 76.2% from the line, drew 22 fouls, and posted a 4.3 assist/turnover ratio.
• Game-high 28 points with five assists, five rebounds and two steals in the win at No. 5 Nebraska. Scored 23 of his 28 in the second half in Lincoln on just six shot attempts to lead the Illini to the come-from-behind win and tied atop the Big Ten standings.
• Game-high 22 points with eight assists, five boards and two steals in the home victory over Washington.
Wagler earns his fifth Big Ten freshman weekly honor this season, and second straight after he was named B1G Freshman and Player of the Week in addition to several National Player of the Week accolades following his record-setting 46-point performance at No. 4 Purdue.
Winners of 11 in a row, Wagler and the No. 5 Fighting Illini are back home Wednesday night, facing Northwestern at 8 p.m. in Hail to the Orange Out at State Farm Center. Tickets are available online at FightingIllini.com.
