As reported by the Washington Post and ESPN, after having a partial Jones fracture in his right foot that was operated on in January, it was discovered that Jer'Zhan "Johnny" Newton will need the same operation performed on his left foot. A partial Jones fracture is a break of the fifth metatarsal, the bone that connects the pinkie toe to the base of the foot.

According to Commanders coach Dan Quinn, doctors determined during a checkup for his right foot that Newton had a similar issue with his left foot.

Newton was unable to participate in the Commanders' rookie minicamp this weekend. Instead, the former Illini defensive lineman was forced to watch practice while wearing a walking boot on his left foot.

Quinn did not provide a timetable for when Newton might be ready to return, but noted it was better to have the procedure now as opposed to August or September.
