CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — Ten or fifteen years ago, when Illinois went toe-to-toe with powerhouse programs like Arizona and Kentucky, they often ended up with an "L," especially if the recruits weren't from Illinois.
Illinois head coach Brad Underwood has transformed the program, now enjoying national exposure. Today, Illinois received a commitment from 6-foot-8, 180-pound Will Riley from Malvern, Pa.
Riley should be a 2025 prep but plans to reclassify to next year's roster, aiming to be one-and-done. During his recent dominant play on the EYBL circuit, Riley had every top program in the country eager for a chance at him. His three-level scoring ability, quickness, and passing skills, especially in full-court play, make him a highly sought-after recruit.
The high school All-American will join a loaded roster at Illinois this fall. According to multiple sources, all players are currently on campus working out except for 7-foot-1 center Tomislav Ivisic, who is expected to arrive soon. Riley's versatility to play multiple positions effectively adds a significant boost to the team, as his scoring ability is a major asset.
With the end of the EYBL circuit in sight. The question on everyone's mind is whether a top prospect will leave the EYBL circuit to work out with his future teammates or continue his journey with the league that has shaped him and put him on the map.
What does this mean for Illinois? They will have one of the nation's top programs, with a roster so deep that playing 10 players is a luxury for Underwood. Since the hiring of Associate Head Coach Orlando Antigua, not only the rest of the Big Ten but also top Power Five programs need to be aware that Illinois will be a major contender in every student-athlete they pursue.
