CHAMPAIGN, IL. – Former Illinois defensive coordinator Ryan Walters had one of the most successful defensive seasons in Memorial Stadium history during his tenure with the Illini. Now in his second year as head coach at Purdue, Walters is struggling with a (1-10) record, with the Boilermakers’ sole win coming against Indiana State.
The news got worse for Walters and his program as Illinois flipped four-star linebacker Grant Beerman from Purdue’s 2025 recruiting class.
Beerman, a 6-foot-4, 220-pound linebacker from West Chester, Ohio, announced his commitment to Illinois today. The Illini sit in fifth place in the Big Ten standings with an (8-3) overall record and a (5-3) mark in conference play under head coach Bret Bielema.
Beerman visited Illinois earlier this month when the Illini hosted the Minnesota Golden Gophers. His commitment highlights the upward trajectory of the program and its ability to address critical roster needs.
The linebacker position is a key focus for Illinois this offseason. Beerman, who runs a 4.60-second 40-yard dash, is expected to thrive in Illinois’ defensive schemes, which emphasize speed and versatility. His athleticism and coverage abilities make him a valuable addition to the Illini defense especially in man coverage.
Bielema and his staff remain active in the recruiting trail, hoping to build on their success with Beerman as they target additional flips during the winter period.
