CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Josh McCray ran for three touchdowns and Luke Altmyer threw for two scores as Illinois topped Michigan State 38-16 Saturday afternoon.
The Illini snap a two-game slide as they close out their home schedule with a 6-1 record.
Illinois (7-3, 4-3) opened the scoring with an Altmyer to Patrick Bryant 52-yard touchdown pass. The Spartans answered, but missed the extra point.
McCray then went around right end on an 11-yard scamper to put Illinois up 14-6 after one quarter.
The Illini increased their lead to 21-6 with an Altmyer scoring toss to Zakhari Franklin in the second quarter.
Michigan State closed that to 21-9 with a field goal just before halftime and an Aiden Chiles touchdown pass on 4th down pulled the Spartans within 21-16 early in the third quarter.
But Illinois scored 17 unanswered points to finish out the win, including two more touchdown runs by McCray.
The Illini travel to face Rutgers next Saturday.
