CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — Illinois head football coach Bret Bielema wasted no time this Thanksgiving weekend, securing another key junior college addition with the commitment of offensive lineman TJ Taylor. The pledge marks Bielema’s second JUCO pickup in as many days, following Thursday’s commitment from cornerback Jakwon Morris, one of the nation’s top junior college defensive backs.

Taylor, a 6-foot-6, 315-pound offensive tackle from College of the Canyons in Santa Clarita, Calif., announced early Friday morning on his X (Twitter) account that he plans to join the Illini as they continue rebuilding the offensive line for next season. Taylor, who attended Golden Valley High School in Santa Clarita, chose Illinois over Kentucky, Arizona, North Carolina State, SMU, and North Carolina.

On3 and Rivals.com rank Taylor as the #9 offensive tackle in the JUCO ranks and the #4 overall junior college prospect in the state of California.

Film Room — Taylor brings immediate value to an Illinois line that needs reinforcements. His strength, athleticism, and quickness jump off the screen, traits that can’t be taught and speak to his natural ability. Bielema has long been known for identifying and developing offensive linemen, and his pursuit of Taylor shows a continued commitment to reshaping the trenches in Champaign.

Illinois’ approach this cycle reflects a clear strategy: tap into the junior college market for experienced, game-ready talent while the rest of the country prioritizes the transfer portal. The Illini will still use the portal, but building depth without relying heavily on freshmen is proving to be a smart, calculated move by Bielema and his staff.

Along with Taylor and Morris, Illinois has now added its third JUCO commitment for the 2026 recruiting class. The third, Alfred Washington, a 6-foot-5, 295-pound offensive tackle from Northeast Mississippi Community College, is ranked #48 nationally among junior college prospects by On3 and Rivals.com.

With momentum building and the staff aggressively pursuing players who can contribute immediately, Illinois is showing that it intends to fortify its foundation long before the next kickoff. As December approaches and recruiting battles heat up across the country, the Illini are staying ahead of the curve and showing no signs of cooling off anytime soon.
