The Illini Men’s Basketball team has battled their way to the program’s 3rd Final Four in 37 years – dating back to the 1989’s Flyin’ Illini team. This year’s team led by charismatic Balkans will join the 89 team along with 2005’s team that featured Dee Brown’s winning smile winning over America in Illini lore.
Each of those teams fell short of the title, with the 1989 team losing in the Final Four to a Michigan team they beat twice earlier in the season (by 12 and 16 points) and the 2005 team was beaten by North Carolina in the championship game.
This Illini team has a chance to write their own chapter in Illini history. There are events that happen which are out of the control of the players, at the same time we know what this Illini team needs to do to win. The biggest success factor under Illini control is the defensive effort and the accompanying results.
If one were to write a story about the Houston leg of the Illini’s NCAA journey – it would be called “A Tale of Two Halves.”
The Illini found a way to move from talking about the importance of defense to improving the defense on the court. Looking at the first half versus Houston and the second half versus Iowa indicates how formidable the Illini can be – when they play solid team defense.
Against Houston, the Illini held the Cougars to 27.3% shooting from the field, including 23.5% from the three-point line. Houston scored on 0nly 9 of 27 possessions and had a paltry .815 points per possession. The Illini held Houston to 22 points in the half and despite a lackluster half offensively for the Illini, they felt confident at the half that they had the game in hand.
Against Iowa, the Illini held the Hawkeyes to 23.1% shooting from the field, including a 27.8% from the three-point line. Iowa scored on 11 of 25 possessions and had a 1.080 points per possession. The Illini held the Hawkeyes to 27 points in the half and only 6 field goals.
When asked what specific actions the players are taking to get better defensive results, Tomislav Ivišić described it as: “take more pride in defending the ball, being more individual responsibility from everybody, if somebody gets beaten other guy has to rotate and help him, being more physical and tougher.”
If the Illini play defense like those two halves for the remaining four halves of this season, they have more than a puncher’s chance of going back to Champaign as the first basketball National Champion in Illinois history.
The important factor in continuing their defensive streak is that defense is not dependent upon anything outside of the player locker room. Defense is effort, focus and intensity. There is no worry of depth perception affecting defensive effort.
Defense offers the Illini a chance to be the author of their own destiny and write the final chapters in the story of the 2025-26 Fighting Illini basketball team.
What do they want to say and how badly do the Illini want to write that ending.
The Illini keys for success are easy and consistent. The Illini must:
This is basketball, not rocket science. Execute these four items and the Illini will win.
Illini fan support of the team may not win a game for the Illini, but it might provide that little extra zip that the Illini could use in the key moments of a game. Illini Nation travels well and the proximity to Indianapolis means it is easier (though expensive) to support the Illini.
If the turnout on Friday is any indication, the Illini will have crowd support squarely in their favor.
For an Illini fan who wants to see this game, if in doubt, head to Indy.
