CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – In a big recruiting victory, Illinois has landed a commitment from former Wake Forest commit and four-star guard Quentin Coleman. The combo guard is currently rated by ESPN as the nation’s 30th-best freshman in the country for the 2026 class.
IlliniGuys Sr. Recruiting Analyst Kedric Prince shared that Coleman was set to take an official visit to Illinois on Monday, just two days after the team punched its ticket to the program’s first Final Four since 2005.
Coleman hails from St. Louis, a nearby region of the map that has been untapped for much of soon-to-be 10th-year head coach Brad Underwood’s Illinois tenure. In its 2026 recruiting class, Illinois has already picked up a commitment from Rolla, Missouri’s Ethan Brown, recording one victory over Braggin’ Rights rivals Missouri.
While Coleman had been committed to the Demon Deacons since October, he reopened his recruitment on March 8, which immediately sparked the interest of teams that initially chased his
signature. The Illini missed the cut from six to four teams before Coleman made his initial decision last fall, but were reported to be after him along with the likes of Missouri, Iowa, UCLA, USC, Texas Tech, St. Louis, and Kansas.
The Missouri Gatorade Player of the Year recipient was rated by ESPN as the fifth-best shooting guard in his class and the best player from Missouri. In his senior campaign, he averaged 23.1 points, 6.1 rebounds, 3.9 assists, and 2.7 steals per game while shooting a blistering 64.9% from the field, 50.6% from three-point range, and 89.7% from the free-throw line.
His Principia squad went 29-2 this past season, which ended with the team lifting the Missouri Class 3 state title.
Quentin Coleman… Keaton Wagler 2.0?
In Quentin Coleman, the Illini could look to replicate some of the success it has had in the 2025-26 season with freshman phenom Keaton Wagler. The Shawnee, Kansas, product has played
a pivotal role in Illinois’ deep run in March, averaging a team-high 17.5 points per game. ESPN’s latest mock draft projects him to be picked sixth overall in the NBA Draft this summer, meaning
the team will be tasked with replacing a lot of production. While Coleman, at 6-foot-4 and 180 pounds, is a few inches shorter than the 6-6 Wagler, the two possess similar skillsets. Both guards are on the leaner side and are lauded for their three-point shooting, ability to create their own shots, and comfort level playing around ball screens.
What’s Next?
The double-edged sword of a deep run leading Illinois to Indianapolis could result in a few players being highly sought after, either by NBA front offices or by other collegiate programs.
Kylan Boswell and Ben Humrichous are the only two graduating seniors, but the likes of David Mirkovic and Andrej Stojakovic could have earned themselves some NBA interest with their play in March.
The team still has open offers to top prospects like Luigi Sigo and Boyuan Zhang, but with the nature of the modern-day college basketball recruiting landscape, Coleman may very well be
the final high school addition in Illinois’ 2026 class. He will be joining four-star Lucas Morillo, fellow Missourian Ethan Brown, and Iowan Landon Davis in Illinois’ 2026 class, which already
ranked as a top-25 class in the nation before his addition.
There’s always the possibility of a late pickup, like Will Riley, who committed in June of 2024 after classing up, but the rest of Illinois’ business to round out its roster for next year is likely to be done in the portal and through international waters. It took until May and July for Mirkovic and Mihailo Petrovic to commit last year, and May for Kasparas Jakucionis and Tomislav Ivisic the year before.
