CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The Illinois football program is making waves on the national stage. Head coach Bret Bielema and his staff secured a commitment from fout-star cornerback Victor Singleton of Toledo, Ohio, solidifying Illinois as a rising force in college football.
This commitment was one of the best-kept secrets from Illinois' perspective. The 2026 recruiting class, already nationally ranked by Rivals, is off to a strong start. With Singleton on board, Illinois is expected to break into the top 15 rankings.
Illinois recently landed edge rusher Jacob Alexander, a 6-foot-4 prospect from Lincoln-Way East, who chose the Illini over Michigan. Singleton’s decision is even more significant—he turned down this year’s national champion, Ohio State, to join the program in Champaign.
Singleton had previously narrowed his list to Michigan, Oregon, Ohio State, and Texas A&M. Choosing Illinois over these powerhouse programs is a major statement.
Defensive backs coach Corey Parker played a crucial role in landing Singleton. Parker, who previously coached at Toledo, offered Singleton a scholarship when he was just an eighth grader—a gesture that resonated deeply with Singleton and his family. On Twitter (X), Singleton made his commitment official through On3 Sports, stating, “I’m home.” Defensive coordinator Aaron Henry was also instrumental in the recruitment process, with Illinois selling the Ohio standout on the success of former Illini star Devon Witherspoon.
Illinois is capitalizing on the momentum of its 10-win season, building a formidable 2026 class. Singleton joins a growing list of talented recruits, including Alexander, wide receiver Kenyon Alston (Florida), offensive lineman Landen Von Seggern (Omaha, Neb.), wide receiver Davon Grant (DeKalb, Ill.), edge rusher Kingston Shaw (Florida), and quarterback Michael Clayton II (Florida). More additions are expected as Illinois continues its recruiting success.
With Singleton’s commitment, Illinois has firmly positioned itself as a contender on the national stage, proving that top talent is willing to choose Champaign over traditional powerhouses.
