CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — The University of Illinois Board of Trustees approved and released the basic details of the two-year contract extension for Illini women’s basketball head coach Shauna Green.

Green’s extension, which was announced last month, now makes her deal with the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign a $5.775 million total over the next six years with incentives could grow the deal to potentially $6.975 million over that same period and possibly make it a $11.225 million package that could last a full decade until the conclusion of the 2033-34 season.

Under Coach Green, Illinois has compiled a 44-25 record, including a 19-17 mark in Big Ten play. In two years under Green, the Illinois women's basketball team has registered the first-ever postseason championship in program history (2024 WBIT), and back-to-back top five season attendances in State Farm Center. Over the last two seasons, Illinois has delivered three upsets of AP Top 20 ranked teams: No. 12 Iowa (1/1/23), No. 14 Indiana (2/19/24) and No. 19 Florida State in the 2024-25 season opener earlier this month.

“Shauna Green has invigorated Fighting Illini Women's Basketball and positioned us for sustained success," Whitman said via a media release announcing her extension in October. "Her ability to unify the locker room and create a winning culture has been evident throughout her career — qualities that have been on full display since the moment she set foot on this campus. The program's rapid ascent, marked by an NCAA Tournament appearance and the inaugural WBIT title during her first two years, has been accompanied by record crowds and increased fan enthusiasm throughout our community.”

Green will earn $900,000 for this current 2024-25 season but will get an annual $200,000 retention bonus which is only contingent on nothing more than the third-year Illini remaining employed in her position at the university. Beyond the retention bonus, which will be paid out at the end of each of the next six years, Green is now currently slated to earn a $1 million salary for the 2028-29 season.

“With Josh and (University of Illinois senior woman administrator) Sara Burton by my side, our program has made great strides in our first two years. I also want to thank our coaches and players for embracing our vision and our approach to building a championship program. I am proud to lead them every day,” Green said via the Oct. 24 media release. “We are extremely excited about what we have accomplished but are by no means satisfied. I am beyond grateful to serve as the head women's basketball coach at a world-class institution like Illinois and work alongside so many talented, dedicated people. I am excited to lead this program for years to come."

The only financial incentive that changes for Green is contract amendment similarly to what Whitman agreed to with head football coach Bret Bielema. With Bielema, his deal with Illinois automatically rolls over with a raise each time the Illini win at least six regular season games. Green’s new deal works in a a similar fashion where the university is obligated to automatically adds an additional year if the Illini are selected for the NCAA Tournament and the Illini head coach gets a $25,000 salary raise in that new rollover year. This incentive clause rollover can be done no more than four times in the six-year period.

Illinois is off to a 3-0 start in this 2024-25 season following home wins over Florida State, Marquette and Eastern Illinois and the Illini are ranked in the Associated Press Top 25 poll, at No. 23, for only the second time before Thanksgiving since 2000.

Shauna Green’s Annual Compensation (Including Retention Bonus) Through New Contract:

  • 2024-25: $1.1 million
  • 2025-26: $1.125 million
  • 2026-27: $1.150 million
  • 2027-28: $1.175 million
  • 2028-29: $1.2 million
  • 2029-30: $1.225 million
