CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Marcus Domask told the IlliniGuys on their syndicated Sports Spectacular radio show last week that he would love to have a 30-point win at some point so that he can watch the final minutes from the bench.
His Illinois teammates granted his wish Tuesday night.
Terrence Shannon Jr. scored a Big Ten season-high 31 points as 14th ranked Illinois bounced back from an upset loss at Michigan State Saturday to post a dominating 97-68 victory over visiting Michigan.
It's the most lopsided win over the Wolverines since an 80-51 win in Champaign in January, 2001 as Illini coach Brad Underwood improves to 8-0 all-time vs. Michigan coach Juwan Howard.
It's the sixth 90-point game of the season and third in conference play for Illinois (18-6, 9-4 in Big Ten), which used a 16-2 run to finish the first half and take their largest lead in the game into the locker room at 47-29.
Shannon keyed the run with 11 points as he scored 19 in the half, hitting 4-of-6 from three-point range. It's his best scoring night since returning from a six-game suspension and two shy of his career-high 33 points scored against Florida Atlantic in early December.
Coleman Hawkins scored 17 points and dished out a team-high five assists. Marcus Domask added 13 points and Quincy Guerrier broke out of a recent funk with 10 points and a team-leading seven rebounds.
Illinois hit 56 percent from the field and made 12 of 25 attempts from the arc.
Michigan (8-17, 3-11) was led by 17 points from Terrance Williams.
Illinois returns to action Saturday when they visit Maryland (4:30pm CT, FOX), where the Illini have never won since the Terrapins joined the Big Ten in 2014.
